Brings Books and Literary Events to 5th Street in Roosevelt Row!
I first opened Lawn Gnome Publishing in 2004 in order to print poetry zines for my friends and I during my last year of college. Our first brick-and-mortar location on 5th Street in the Roosevelt Row Arts’ District of Phoenix opened in February of 2012. Admittedly, I was an inexperienced entrepreneur at the time. When we first opened, I was a poet that worked in many small-businesses, but knew nothing about running a business.
For five years, I learned about the used books business, and kept the lights on by living in my bookstore, running events, selling art for local artists, and listing Lawn Gnome’s inventory online. After making many mistakes, and learning how to be a father, the first location closed in 2017. I made a short-lived second try on Central Avenue near Hula’s Modern Tiki, Megaphone PHX, and Fame Caffe. Since then, I grew my understanding of small business by working as a marketer for an alternative press, a large social media company and a few boutique advertising agencies. With a new set of tools and knowledge, it is time to open a new retail store on the street that started it all, 5th Street and Roosevelt. Our new location is 912 N 5th Street, in the 1930’s bungalow that once housed Of The Earth, Nachobot, Rezbot, Melt Ice Cream, MissConstrued Boutique, Black Raven Tattoo, and Buried Treasures.
Since 2012, my mission with Lawn Gnome Publishing is to put books in hands, promote literacy, and to integrate arts programming with communities. I will do everything I can to deliver on this promise, but I need your help with making this mission sustainable.
